Fungal diseaseSeverity: Moderate
Fruit Rot
Rhizopus artocarpi (and other fruit-rotting fungi)
Symptoms
Soft brown rot spreading from the flower or stalk end of the fruit, soon covered with grey-black mould and whisker-like fungal growth. Young fruitlets often blacken and drop before maturing.
Prevention
Bag developing fruit and prune for airflow to keep the canopy dry. Remove and destroy mummified fruit and fallen debris that carry the fungus.
Treatment
Organic
Spray copper-based fungicide at flowering and early fruit set. Harvest promptly and handle fruit gently to avoid wounds that invite rot.
Chemical (last resort)
Apply mancozeb or carbendazim from flowering through early fruit development during wet weather. Rotate groups and observe PHI on edible fruit.
