Symptoms
Dense colonies on growing tips and undersides of leaves. Yellowing and downward curling of leaves. Stunted plant growth and wilting. Transmits peanut mottle virus, peanut stripe virus, and other aphid-borne viruses.
Prevention
Use reflective mulch to deter winged aphids. Inspect plants regularly, especially growing tips. Encourage natural enemies (ladybirds, parasitic wasps, lacewings). Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization.
Treatment
Organic
Spray neem oil or insecticidal soap targeting colonies. Use strong water jets to dislodge colonies. Introduce parasitic wasps or release lacewing larvae.
Chemical (last resort)
Apply imidacloprid or dimethoate as systemic sprays. Target colonies early before virus transmission occurs. Observe PHI carefully for edible crops.
